Results of NWTO Survey of USTA Sections: Question 7
In 2022-2023, a Task Force of the Board of the NWTO completed a 10-question survey of 16 of the 17 Sections of the USTA (all but the Caribbean). The newsletter will be publishing the results of the survey, one question at a time. Learn more about this initiative here.
QUESTION 7: Does your Section regularly recognize sectionally, nationally, or internationally ranked adult players? How is this done?
Florida: They use social media when info is provided to them. They do spotlight players’ achievements when they know about it. She admitted they could probably do a better job.
Midwest: Not really. Might be some social media to recognize someone.
Intermountain: The Section sends out blasts when it gets information from the USTA National.
Eastern: Yes, at banquets.
Pacific Northwest: Yes
Southern California: Yes - through the newsletters, social media, and website. ln addition to highlighting events (in the section and nationally), the media highlight rankings, results, players' performances, and they do player profiles. Annual District awards, Section event awards: Players are provided a ranking certificate at the end of the year (but this comes from USTA nationally).
Texas: Nothing formal. Ranking lists in print magazines (which are maybe going away). Used to do certificates but it was perceived to be low value against the cost involved. Have a Margaret Canby social media feature in the work. Similar features are recognized as an opportunity.
Southern: The Southern Section used to recognize their ranked players but hasn’t done so for the past several years. How is this done? In 2024 the Adult Competition Committee has proposed an initiative where they will recognize the top players from the ranking year 2023. Some type of memento will be awarded.
New England: We have a ceremony during the Newport tourney at the Hall of Fame for all adults who get a #1 ranking at the end of the year. We have someone who writes articles for our site about unique and fun stories about players in New England.
Northern California: No, but when I asked, they were interested in finding a way to do so.
Southwest: No
Middle States: It is up to the district. I live in NJD (New Jersey) and we are recognizing Nationally ranked players at our awards event in March.
Northern: N/A
Hawaii: We recognize players with national rankings and with tournament successes by including content for newsletters and for stand-alone emails that are submitted to the USTA National office.
MidAtlantic: If provided the information, we share on social media, etc.
Missouri Valley: No
