Tournament Recap: Barbara Cooper Cup

The Barbara Cooper Cup was held February 5-9 at the Lauderdale Tennis Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The Florida weather was perfect, not too hot, humid or windy. There were players from Boston, Quebec, New York, and Arkansas that were very happy to be in Florida!
The players were treated to lunch each day which was greatly appreciated. The NWTO sponsored two of these lunches.
The 45s singles draw had some awesome talent with Jennifer Fiers and Alison Rovner playing in their first Cooper Cup. Alison took out the top seed in the semis while Jennifer took out the number seed 2 in the first round. Jennifer said this week was her first singles match in 25 years!
In the 45s doubles, local pro Caroline Verhelle and her partner Windy Dees played a blistering match against the 55s singles champ Tisha Kilburn and her partner Eva Koksalova with Caroline and Windy coming out on top to win the round robin. Watching all the 45s play, one spectator stated that he felt like he was at the Miami Open.
After winning the 50s at Palm Beach Gardens last week, Tisha Kilburn continued her winning form by topping Vicki Buholz in the finals of the 55s singles. Vicki teamed up with Susan Wright to win the 55s doubles over Terri Thyssen and Susan Boyer.
The 65s welcomed Kerry Young back to competition. Kerry has been away for quite a while with injuries. The 65s also had some first time players to the Cooper Cup, Dianne Lavoie and Lyne Guerer. Susan Wright played and won another doubles, this time with Carolyn Nichols as her partner. They played Kerry and Cindy LePrevost in the final.
The 75s singles final was a battle of drop shots between Toni Novack and Gwenda Ward with Gwenda prevailing. In the 75s doubles, Donna Fales and Carol Clay came out on top in their match with Cindy Babb and Sue Bramlette.
Our very own Co-President Joan Oelschlager was chosen as the tournament Sportswoman for this year and was presented with a nice trophy by Carol Clay, representing the Cooper Cup.
