Tournament Recap: Palm Beach Gardens Les Grandes Dames

KUDOS again for a fabulous Women’s Masters Tennis event with perfect weather to Tournament Director Trish Faulkner, her assistants Carol Hatfield and Iain Sullivan, USTA officials, Palm Beach Gardens Tennis and Pickleball Center and staff, NWTO, lunch catering by Joseph’s Classic Market and, of course, the amazing 74 women players entered in events ranging in age from 30-80+ singles and doubles. A truly wonderful and thrilling week-long event at an immaculate facility!!
Results are as follows:
The 30s singles round-robin was won by Eva Koksalova with Karin Duplessis in second; a thrilling 40s doubles final was won in two very close sets by Sue Kaleel and Kristen Charlton over Tisha Kilburn and Eva Koksalova.
50s singles was won by Tisha Kilburn, with Susan Wright in strong second, newcomer and wonderful player Andrea Askowitz placed third and Leslie Wargo finished fourth, having to retire injured. Rounding out fifth place, Catherine Morgan won a tough 3-set match against Andrea Wohlschlaeger.
50s doubles witnessed a very strong field of two round-robin groups with Adrienne Simmons and Erin Boynton winning Playoff 1 and placing first overall ahead of runners-up Sue Kaleel and Kristen Charlton; Krista Geoffrion and Sharon Runk won Playoff 2 and placed third over Amy Templeton and Yin Chee Chin; and Kathy Myers and Lisa Cassells claimed Playoff 3 and fifth place via injury walkover of Anne-Marie Miller and Kristine Dionne.
60s singles saw fierce competition from a field of 15 with Susan Boyer prevailing in a fabulous three-set final over runner-up Christina Kaus, Erin Boynton placing third in two close sets over Shelly Works, and Daniela Esswein winning in three sets over Catherine Morgan to place fifth.
60s doubles also saw a very strong field of 7 teams with Susan Wright and Christine Kaus winning a hard-fought, two-set final over Carolyn Nichols and Jenny Klitch; Shelly Works and Daniella Esswein coming in third over Trieste McIntosh and Krista Geoffrion via injury walkover.
70s singles had an incredible field of 13 players and was won by Caroyln Nichols in a two-set final over runner-up Patricia Purcell; Becky Timmis placed third over Kathy Foulk via injury walkover; and Donna Drosner edged out Deborah Burgess in two sets for fifth place.
70s doubles had 6 teams divided into two robin-robin groups with Patricia Purcell and Marilyn Jan Kirkland prevailing in a three-set final over Cindy Leprevost and Becky Timmis; Deborah Burgess and Donna Drosner coming in third over Betsy Savitt and Kathy Foulk via injury walkover; and Joan Oelschlager and Margaret Machoian placing fifth in two sets over Lou Armstrong and Susan Wareing.
80s singles had an incredible field of 5 and was played in round-robin format with Susan Kimball the winner; Betty Wachob second; Frances Dickenson third; Dineka Vandeburgt fourth; and Irma de Marzo fifth.
80s doubles was won by Susan Kimball and Betty Wachob in two sets over Frances Dickenson and Dineka Vandeburgt.
