Tournament Recap: USTA National Grass Court Championships

Mylène Martin

DATES: September 26 - Oct 1, 2023
LOCATION: Mission Hills, CA
DIVISIONS: Level 1, 30-80

Since going over to London this summer for another tennis event and only being able to practice on grass (I got injured and couldn’t play the matches), I’ve been set on making it to the Grass Court Championships at the Mission Hills Country Club. I was supposed to make it last year but ended up having to cancel. And, I am so glad I made it!

When you first see the grass courts, they are absolutely perfect and soft (you really have to take in that view before an 8am match). Even though it is much easier on the body, I highly recommend getting in a lot of squats before playing on grass - they will get sore!

This was my second time at the Mission Hills Country Club, and just like last time, the staff was amazing! The club is absolutely beautiful, which made my time there even better. The tournament staff was so welcoming and really tried to accommodate everyone as much as possible. We got a very nice goody bag, AND we had cooling towels and bananas at our disposal. I know that heat didn’t help but they really worked through it all by scheduling singles early for instance. They put on such a fun players’ party with delicious food and great music to get everyone on the dance floor! And we did manage to have most people on the dance floor for the Electric slide (thank you Mariko).

Now, when it came to tennis, it did not disappoint either. Between the 3-hour matches, the drop shots that died right then and there, and the always inspiring 70s and 80s categories, there was no shortage of amazing tennis. I personally love watching these ladies as they are true inspirations.

One of the reasons I love to come to these tournaments is definitely for the competition, but catching up with old friends, forming new friendships, and making amazing memories is what will stay with me forever. It really is a family away from my family.

I am so happy I got to participate in the Grass Court Championships and I hope I get to play it again soon. Thank you for your hospitality and making these few days unforgettable! If you can, I highly recommend making the trip next year.
