Memphis Indoors Debuts at Leftwich Tennis Center
The Level 1 National Women’s Indoor Championships for the 65, 70, 75, 80, 90 and 95 age divisions found a new home September 3–7 at Memphis’s impressive Leftwich Tennis Center.
Located in the university district, this state-of-the-art public facility features 24 outdoor courts and 12 beautiful indoor courts with tournament-grade lighting. It also serves as the official home court of the University of Memphis Tigers.
Players received a thoughtful welcome gift: a foldable duffel bag that tucked easily into luggage for the trip home. NWTO provided entrants with $20 Starbucks gift cards, and the NWTO table offered information, snacks and a welcoming place to stop between matches. A catered dinner brought players together over a plentiful spread, including an especially tasty variety of vegetable dishes.
The temperature contrast was memorable! Outside, Memphis approached 100 degrees daily; inside, the courts were decidedly cool, with the upstairs viewing area feeling downright frosty.
Although entries were light for this debut at a new location, the competition was strong. Small draws with just two seeds produced some formidable early matchups—including a first-round meeting between gold ball champions Susan Wright and Frances Chandler.
With its outstanding courts and welcoming amenities, Leftwich made an impressive first showing as the tournament’s new home. Hopefully, next year will bring larger fields and introduce more players to this excellent venue.
